ROCKIES SECOND: Vargas issues leadoff walk to his former Long Beach State teammate Troy Tulowitzki but gets three fly outs. 2-0 Mariners.

MARINERS SECOND: Kyle Seager, who has emerged as the Mariners most productive offensive player, blasted a two-run homer to right after Montero worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch. That’s five homers and 25 RBIs for Seager. 2-0 Mariners.

ROCKIES FIRST: Vargas gets the Rockies 1-2-3 without a ball leaving the infield. He’s coming off a game in Boston in which he gave up five runs in six innings. 0-0.

MARINERS FIRST: Rookie Christian Friedrich, making his third career start, gets the Mariners in order. He was Colorado’s first-round pick in 2008 out of Eastern Kentucky University and is 1-0 with a 1.38 in his first two starts, with 17 strikeouts in 13 innings.

Millwood hurls masterful two-hit shutout, his first since 2003.

ROCKIES SIXTH: Sorry, major wireless issues tonight at Coors. Millwood lost his no-hitter with two outs in the sixth on an infield single off Kyle Seager’s glove — though the official score didn’t announce his decision until Jordan Pacheco had delivered a clean single to center, on which Scutaro was thrown out at third to end the inning. 3-0 Mariners.

ROCKIES FOURTH: Another 1-2-3 inning for Millwood, albeit with a rocket at third baseman Kyle Seager by leadoff man Jordan Pacheco. Through four, Rockies only baserunner is a one-out walk by Dexter Fowler in the third. 2-0 Mariners.

MARINERS FOURTH: Smoak delivered a one-out single and is now 11-for-31 (.355) on this road trip. He was promptly erased on a 4-6-3 double-play ball by Jaso. Millwood still hasn’t given up a hit. 2-0 Mariners.

MARINERS THIRD: Ichiro gets a two-out single but Seager strikes out. 2-0 Mariners.

MARINERS SECOND: Mike Carp, lugging a .132 average, lofted a homer to dead center for a 2-0 Mariner lead.

ROCKIES FIRST: Nice easy 1-2-3 inning for Millwood against his old Rockies teammates. He made nine starts for Colorado last year. 1-0 Mariners.

MARINERS FIRST: After a one-out triple by Michael Saunders, Ichiro grounded weakly to shortstop, with Saunders having to hold. The Mariners have been 2-for-43 with runners in scoring position in their six losses on this road trip. But Seager came through with a clutch two-out single, as he has done often, scoring Saunders for a 1-0 Mariner lead.

I’m trying to wrap my arms around this weird 6:40 start, but it just doesn’t feel right.

I asked Dustin Ackley and Kyle Seager about facing their old college teammate, Alex White. They’ve each faced him only once as a pro, earlier this year in spring training. Ackley grounded out and Seager grounded into a double play.

“I faced him a lot in college, scrimmages and what not,” Seager said. “I’ve seen him throw many, many times. I think we’re both familiar with each other, same with Dustin. Dustin has seen him just as much as I have. We played together in high school, all three of us. We go way back.”

“He was always a competitor,” Ackley said. “He was a bulldog that would go out there, give it all he had. I played with him in college, and I played with him in some summer ball before that. He’s always been a fun guy to play behind and with, that’s for sure.”

In their freshman year, their North Carolina team lost in the College World Series final to Oregon State.
