Yes, that’s the catcher hitting leadoff — just the third time that’s happened in Mariner history. Bob Stinson, ol’ Scrap Iron, did so twice in 1978 (and went 2-for-7 with two walks and a home run), so it’s been 34 years of waiting for a reprise. But for Jaso, it’s not that big a deal. He’s hit leadoff 51 previous times, all with Tampa Bay, putting up a .262/.360/.393 line. Most of those (45 leadoff starts) came in 2010, when Jaso’s on-base percentage from the one hole was an excellent .380 for a playoff-bound Rays team.

“I don’t know if I’d say I like it,” Jaso said. “I like being in the lineup. The only difference with leadoff is that whenever you lead off a game, there’s never anyone on base. You need to gather as much information as possible. If you’re somewhere else in the lineup, there might be people on and situational things, and you’ve got to execute whatever pitch you can. It might be pitch one. It doesn’t really give you time to gather that information. That’s the difference. After that, it’s a just a big cluster.”

Franklin Gutierrez will sit out tonight’s game and try to use off-day to recover

Franklin Gutierrez, not surprisingly, was scratched from tonight’s lineup and Michael Saunders inserted in his place. This comes after he was pulled in the third inning of last night’s game when he began hyperventilating. Gutierrez had a stomach ailment — something likened to the flu — last weekend, but the team says it’s more of a respiratory thing now.

So, it could be that “flu” or whatever it is, working its way upwards. We’ve had some cooler weather here and the big temperature change can make people feel under the weather.

When I spoke to Gutierrez before batting practice this afternoon, he still wasn’t sure what the problem is now or was over the weekend.

“Was it the flu?” he said. “I don’t even know that. I don’t know what the problem is.”

Gutierrez said he felt better today and could be available for pinch-hit or pinch-running duty later on. He said he was planning to see a doctor again today after the A’s team physician examined him last night.

This type of hyperventilating/shortness of breath has never been an issue for Gutierrez before and he said he’d like to get to the bottom of it.

“Right now, I just don’t know anything,” he said.

Mariners manager Daren Brown said it’s unlikely Gutierrez will see any action tonight.
