White Sox 4, Mariners 0: M’s lay another egg. We now have enough to start a hunt

Yeah, just two hits by the Mariners, only one of them clean. Milton Bradley thinks a ball was pounded into the ground instead of popped up and gets doubled off. Just another night at Safeco Field as the countdown to 100 continues.

Hats off to you all! No, seriously, the hat is coming off.

UPDATED — Mariners 3, Orioles 1: Jason Vargas strong again, offense finds just enough to push Seattle over .500

Hard to believe the Mariners are back to a game above .500 considering all the doom and gloom of eight days ago. But the M’s have won six of seven, including a 3-1 win tonight over Baltimore that was much tougher than it should have been, and have improved to 8-7 after a 2-6 start.

It all starts with the pitching, because this offense was again nothing to brag about tonight.

Jason Vargas went seven strong innings, allowing just a run on three hits while fanning five and walking two. Get that and you’ll win most times.

No real use of that cutter by Vargas this time, save for jamming Nolan Reimold for a key popout in a one-run game in the sixth. Instead, Vargas described his recipe for success as being: “Pounding the strike zone with fastballs and change-ups. We didn’t throw a whole lot of breaking balls. Just changing back and forth.”

That first inning, the only one in which he really fell behind hitters, was one in which Vargas was adjusting tothe strike zone of plate umpire Eric Cooper. Once he did, the strike zone remained consistent and Vargas never looked back.

The one obvious upper hand for Vargas in any battle for a fifth starter’s job with Doug Fister is his strikeout ability so far. Vargas has fanned 16 guys and walked only three in 18 1/3 innings. Fister has struck out nine guys and walked four in 19 innings.

So far at least, Vargas has shown himself to be better at getting guys out on his own.

Vargas continues to make a compelling case that he remain in the rotation when Cliff Lee is healthy.

But as we mentioned earlier today, there could be other factors that enter into the equation, so hold on tight the next 12 days or so. This is a very good problem for any team to have.
