MLB Tickets – Cy Young Candidates Flourishing Down Stretch in A.L

Though the American League pitchers haven’t been quite as dominant as the National League ones, the A.L still has plenty to offer in terms of Cy Young candidates.  Let’s take look at the most impressive A.L. pitchers this year.  (Note: All stats as of Aug. 16.)

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays:

Price has had nothing short of a breakout season in Tampa.  With an ERA well under 3.00 and a 15-5 record, Price is finally living up to the tremendous hype that surrounded him when he first came into the league.  His strikeout to walk ratio isn’t spectacular but he’s also one of the only pitchers with a legitimate shot at 20 wins, which would make his season look even more impressive than it already is.

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox:

Buchholz is actually leading the American League in ERA with a 2.49.  That alone is good enough to get him at least a couple of Cy Young votes and his 13-5 record is also a standout.  It’s hard to imagine Buchholz actually pulling down the award, but Boston fans have to be excited about their young pitching.  However, Buchholz and Jon Lester should be hitting the tee box in early October as the Yankees head into the postseason.

Cliff Lee, Texas Rangers:

After starting the season on the D.L., Cliff Lee has turned 2010 into another spectacular season.  Not only does his WHIP (0.93) lead all big league starters but Lee has walked just nine batters all season in 161 innings.  With his jaw-dropping control and ability to go deep into games, Lee has made the Texas Rangers a legitimate World Series contender this year and a frightening team even to loaded teams like Tampa and New York.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners:

Hernandez is probably the biggest seller of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/mlb-tickets/”>MLB tickets</a> on the team outside of Ichiro Suzuki and has put together a very good season after a rough start.  Though he may have a losing record due to Seattle’s anemic offense, Hernandez has a great ERA (2.62) and is second in the American League in strikeouts.  It’s very difficult to imagine a pitcher with a losing record winning the Cy Young, but Hernandez should be a finalist anyway.

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox:

Yankee fans may want to see C.C. Sabathia in the mix for the Cy Young, but Lester has actually been the better starter throughout the season.  With a 2.80 ERA and a WHIP of 1.13, Lester seems to be reaching the potential that fans in Beantown have been talking about for a few seasons.  Lester won’t win the award this year, but he looks to be in the running for many seasons if he can stay healthy.

Trevor Cahill, Oakland A’s:

Many people don’t even know who Trevor Cahill is, but that’s only because he plays on a team that has been out of the limelight all season long as Texas runs away with the division.  Cahill has a ridiculously low WHIP of 0.98 and trails only Buchholz in the American League with his 2.50 ERA.  With a 12-5 record, Cahill has also been a main reason the A’s have remained around .500 for most of the season despite having less overall talent than the Rangers or Angels.

Winner: Cliff Lee

If the Cy Young is supposed to be rewarded to the most dominant pitcher in the league, that would have to be Cliff Lee.  Despite a relatively mediocre record of 10-5, Lee’s control has been absurd and he has pitched a complete game in more than a third of his 2010 starts.  With Lee likely to tally some more wins after being traded to the Rangers, he has to be considered the frontrunner until someone else steps elevates himself to Lee’s level.

A Guide To Baseball Statistics

Why All The Stats?
Baseball players tend to be an interesting bunch. First of all, they are very superstitious. One of the game’s greats, Wade Boggs, ate fried chicken before every game because he believed it helped him get hits. Other players have been known to not change their socks while on a hot streak.

As an umpire you learn to ignore the small insults but when it continues or escalates you have to take action to control managers, coaches, and players. Felix Hernandez broke down in tears when told of Cy Young Award win

mlb_a_hernandez_600.jpg

Many of you were wondering why, earlier today, there were reports out of Venezuela that Felix Hernandez had won the AL Cy Young Award when nobody here was reporting it. Well, as Baseball Writers Association of America members, we felt obliged to respect the 11 a.m. PST embargo on the news that our association had mandated.

Hernandez, however, received a phone call in advance of the news telling him he’d won and the handful of Latin American reporters who were with him at his Venezuelan home tweeted the news and broke the embargo. It happens. But after that phone call, Hernandez did something he hasn’t done in a while.

He burst into tears.

“I don’t have any words to explain how I feel,” he said. “I mean, you cannot explain it. The first time I heard I won the Cy Young, my mind was ‘Really? Really?’ And I just asked one more time ‘I won the Cy Young?’ And they said ‘Yes, you won the Cy Young.’

“And I started crying. And my wife jumped on me. And my whole family started jumping around the house. It was a lot of talking, a lot of jumping. It was a great, great, amazing thing, man.”

Hernandez becomes the first starter ever to win the award with fewer than 15 victories. He went 13-12 this year, but says the award should be about far more than the lone stat.
